Behind every statistics is the life of a child which is unique which we pledge to protect and create a better world for their development. Therefore, our mission is to 'create the demand' to make urban development policies enumerated under JnNURM and RAY effective for young children in terms of their physical living environment in slums.

Many people around the world were touched by the Academy Award-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" that depicts the harsh life of orphans and street children in India. And those who work in poverty projects there say the real conditions are, if anything, worse than what was shown. Many of the estimated 18 million poor children in India rely on international charity projects like Baal Dan, a small effort started in 2005 by one young woman from Dallas, Texas who was born in India but who grew up elsewhere. In this week's installment of VOA's Making a Difference, Correspondent Greg Flakus has the story of Tanya Pinto of Dallas, Texas, and her work with India's children.
This short film, narrated by Mark Tully, shows a glimpse of what life is like for one family living in the slum of Kamla Nehru Nagar (Bihar, central India). Slum-dwellers are vulnerable. With no permanent roof over their heads, little prospect of a secure job and poor access to basic sanitation, bad health and social exclusion is rife. Children can become easy victims of crime, prostitution and child labour. This video shows how preventable diseases take a huge toll on slum-dwelling families.
